Let it Go! Let it Go! Let it Go!: A New Christmas Motto

A new Christmas motto for moms!

Christmas time is one of my absolute favorite times of the year. But I've got to be honest with you…I am sick and tired of feeling stressed and overwhelmed in the month of December. For the last couple of Januaries, I have looked back on December with such mixed feelings. Yes, we did lots of slap-up things together equally a family. But I as well question whether I was able to actually enjoy all of the sugariness moments or whether I was likewise busy checking things off my to-do listing all in the proper name of trying to practise it all.

This yr, I decided enough is enough. Things will exist quite a flake simpler around hither…and I'yard embracing a new motto:

Let it Get! Let it Go! Permit it Go!

Allow it Go: The Commercialism of Christmas

Simple Christmas

Just because nosotros might be able to provide tons of presents for each of our children, doesn't necessarily mean we should. Virtually of the states won't exist able to let the commercialism of Christmas goentirely (it is then fun to find the perfect gift for the people nosotros love), merely at least we can tone it down a notch.

For the last couple of years, nosotros've tried to requite our boys only iii gifts (plus their stocking stuffers). This makes for a pretty uncomplicated Christmas morning time and allows us some fourth dimension to concentrate on celebrating the birth of our Savior. This year, I ordered a volume chosenThe Sparkle Boxto try to encourage united states all to recollect exterior of ourselves.

Our extended families have both toned downward the gift giving this year as well. We're cartoon names on my side of the family and nosotros're only exchanging gifts for the children on my married man'due south side of the family unit.

Let information technology Become: The Pinterest-worthy demands nosotros are placing on ourselves for perfect decorations, perfectly wrapped gifts, and perfect food.

Pinterest

Guess what? In 20 years when nosotros look back on holidays spent with our families, volition we think the place cards or the centerpiece? Will we retrieve that we finally nailed the pumpkin pie recipe or how we gave the best neighbor gifts in the history of mankind? I seriously dubiety it.

Some of these "footling" things help establish our family unit's traditions, but some of them are only to brand ourselves experience like nosotros accept done Christmas right by making in shiny, cute, and Pinterest-worthy. Unfortunately, it's our family members who will suffer if we, as moms, are so concerned with making everythinglook perfect that we are stressed and frazzled with the amazing people God has blessed us with (or maybe this is just me?).

Practice yourself (and your family) a favor. Log out of Pinterest for a while (and put abroad the Martha Stewart magazines). Instead, make a listing of iii priority activities you lot want to do aside from your usual family unit gatherings. Here are ours:

  • Continue celebrating Advent by having a curt devotional each day. Nosotros will be rotating Truth in the Tinsel, our Advent Boxes, and clips ofWhy Practice Nosotros Telephone call it Christmas?
  • Deliver small gifts to neighbors and friends.
  • Make Christmas cookies and so proceed the "Minivan Express" to look at Christmas lights (usually nosotros practise this on December 23).

Those are our "extra" priorities bated from getting together with both of our families and having our Christmas Eve and Christmas Day traditions. I'm not going to stress out if we don't go to plan creative Elf on the Shelf stunts (we don't even accept an Elf on the Shelf), brand gingerbread houses, do an act of kindness every solar day in December (though it is a noble idea) or become caroling. If nosotros but and so happen to accept the time and energy for such things, then great. Otherwise, I recall our priority activities will make for a memorable holiday (and go along some wonderful traditions we've already started in the by) while allowingeveryoneto exist relaxed and stress-free.

Let information technology Go:  The expectation of a drama-costless holiday where anybody is cheerful and happy.

too much christmas

Permit's confront it:  In that location is bound to exist a kid who is whiny (or two!), who wants the gift their brother got instead, who refuses to show appreciation to a family unit fellow member, or who is but plain cranky. Nosotros're talking almost holidays with young children, here. If your kids are anything like mine, the apprehension and lack of a regular schedule can make them extremely discombobulated and grouchy.

Honestly, there is bound to exist an adult or two who might human action this way too. Families are a beautiful mess, aren't they?!?!

Do yourself a favor:  Wait chaos, await discontentment, expect a little bit of drama…and as hard every bit it may be, only embrace it. This is a part of the crazy life we alive in as parents of young children. And requite the adults and family members around yous a trivial grace to be less-than-perfect as well. Everyone is fighting their own battles, afterward all.

What about you lot? Do you have something you need to let get of to brand this holiday season fifty-fifty sweeter???
